What would count as your first investment? Who did it for you?
I invested in a car, two houses, two commercial sites. My CA and my father take the decision for my investments.
Looking back, was it a sound decision?
I am enjoying the car. My house is a very good investment and the commercial sites are very productive. I have done excellent investments.
Gold? Land? Stocks? In which order would you invest in them and why? What is the percentage that you have invested in each?
I have no investment in gold, land and stocks.
What are the investments you have blind faith in? Why?
I have enough FDs, no RBI bonds and no money in a PPF investment FDs are one of the hassle-free ways of saving.
Do you have substantial health insurance coverage? What about life insurance plans?
I used to have a very limited investment in insurance schemes, but this year I have gone for a huge investment -roughly over Rs 10 million per year -in life insurance with LIC India for a continuous 16 year period. I found it a hassle-free investment. It will protect my life and will give a huge pension as a means of livelihood after I turn 40.The endorsement money I earn is enough to provide the money required for its installments. I have also invested some money in the making of health products for women in collaboration with a trusted industrialist. I hope it is my best investment in the Startup India project.
Any pension and retirement plans that you hope to fall back on?
I am employed with BPCL and I wish to continue with the public sector company. I will get pension from the company, which will also be very helpful. The company takes care of my health insurance too.
The best investment-related advice you have ever been given or read?
Put valued income in LIC or FDs.These two are best options and hassle free. Other projects require a lot of counselling from so many people, which will not allow a spor person to move smoothly.
Fill in the blanks. Money cannot buy happiness but it can….
Give a name and dignity in society. It makes your life smooth if you are able to have ready liquidity from your investments. It may spoil your dreams if put into wrong projects. Money also gives happiness, if it is well-taxed, saved and well-invested in the right way.
Women and Investing
Saina said “My CA and my father take the decision for my investments.” Let’s face it. Money matters, so whether you are single or married, a career woman or homemaker, you need to take charge of your financial affairs. Managing your money wisely is a prerequisite for financial comfort. The principles of investment planning—starting early, having a long-term plan and investing regularly are the same for men and women. And women have special investment needs, If you look at the life patterns of women, you’ll see that:
- Women tend to live longer than men.
- Their careers are interrupted by family needs.
- More often than not, women prefer a conservative investment strategy. It has been observed that Women play safe with their money, opting for fixed deposits and taxfree bonds. Someone has to handhold them to start taking their own financial decisions. You take decisions at work or home, why not with your finances. Everyone commits mistake but as they say Darr ke Aage Jeet Hain. Our page Investing is collection of articles for Investing.
Given inflation and the many responsibilities they have taken on, as well as the high aspirations they have, there is a compelling need for women to take charge of their financial planning. Investing is not gender-related. Anyone who earns money needs an investment game plan so as not to fritter away the money and employ it in a way to achieve tangible goals.
Earlier most working women were mere signatories to investment products chosen by their fathers or husbands. Percentage of women making investment decisions independently is rising . This has been influenced by various factors like increased awareness spread by financial product companies through advertisements and other initiatives, companies educating employees on tax planning and peer encouragement. Internet has also aided women with their investments as it allows them to research and zero in on schemes fit for them.
