Forgot UAN Password: How to reset and change UAN password

Have you forgotten your UAN Password and want to recover or reset it? This article talks about how to reset and change UAN password when you have your mobile number with UAN registered with you but you have forgotten your UAN password.

Overview of Steps to Change Mobile Number in UAN if forgotten Password

This works only if the Name, Date of Birth, Gender and Aadhaar/PAN that you enter matches the details with your UAN. Else you will get an error message. In that case, contact your employer for the details of your UAN.

  • Go to UAN website of EPF at UAN  New Website
  • Click on Forgot Password.
  • Enter your  UAN number and Captcha. Click on Verify.
  • The mobile number mapped to your UAN will be shown. If you want to change the mobile Number you can click on No.
  • You will see the screen asking for your Name, Date of Birth, Gender, KYC Type, and Document Number. Enter your details. Click on Verify near the Document number.
  • After details are verified. You can enter your new Mobile number and get OTP in it.
  • Then enter your Password twice.
  • You will see Password changed successfully message. You can click on Login to log with your new password.

Steps to Recover and Reset UAN password if Mobile Number is not Changed

  • Go to EPFO website at UAN: Home
  • Click on Forgot Password.
  • Enter your  UAN number and Captcha. Click on Verify.
  • The mobile number mapped to your UAN will be shown. If you want to change the mobile Number you can click on No.
  • Click on Get Authorized Pin
  • If OTP is successfully sent, you will see the message OTP is successfully sent. If the website is unable to send the OTP(due to heavy traffic) you will get the window with message Failed to send OTP. Please try again later. Then try the steps mentioned above again after some time.
  • If OTP is sent successfully, then you will get the OTP on your mobile number registered with the UAN. The message would be Dear Mr. ABC XYZ. Your OTP corresponding to OTP id 6000 is 3937. Enter this pin to set a new password for your account. Please use the pin and not the OTP id.
  • Enter the OTP Pin at Enter Authorization Pin. 
  • Enter the New Password.  The Password should contain minimum 7 characters and Maximum 20 characters. Minimum 4 alphabets, minimum 2 digits, 1 special character.  At least one character out of 4 alphabets should be Capital and one small letter. 
  • Confirm the New Password.
  • Click Submit button.
  • You will get a window saying password successfully changed.
  • Login to UAN New Website with UAN number and new Password.

Details on how to Reset and Change UAN password after Logging in UAN

The UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each Employee Provident Fund(EPF) member by the Employee Provident Fund  Organization(EPFO) which gives him control of his EPF account and minimizes the role of employer. Once the member has activated his UAN based registration, he can any time log in to the portal by using his username and password created. UAN

  • Download Passbook/UAN Card,
  • List Previous Member ID/View Linking Status,
  • File Transfer Claim/View Transfer Claim Status/System Generated Transfer Claim Status,
  • Edit Mobile Number/Edit Email ID/Update KYC Information/Change Password/Edit Personal Details,

When does one set up UAN password?

You set up UAN password when you register your UAN and activate it. As explained in the article UAN or Universal Account Number and Registration of UAN, Once you receive the Universal account number or UAN from your employer, you have to log on to the official website https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/. When you Click on Activate UAN Based Registration you have to enter your UAN, mobile number and member ID. You will receive an authorisation PIN on your mobile, as shown in the image below.

Steps to Change UAN password

  • Go to UAN Member e-SEWA Portal by clicking here. 
  • Login to UAN Portal using your UAN number and new password sent.
  • Click on  Account->CHANGE PASSWORD

  • Enter the old password and new password (one sent through SMS) twice. Remember The password for UAN should be alphanumeric, have minimum 1 special character and 8-25 character long. Special characters are one of  ! @ # $ % ^ & * ). Click on Update
  • You will see the message You have successfully change your password, as shown in the image below.
  • You would also get a SMS on your registered mobile, You have successfully change your password against UAN <UAN number> on UAN Member portal.

      Or try using Aadhaar or PAN or PF number

    • EPFO or Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation on 21 Feb 2018 announced an interest rate of 8.55 for the year FY 2017-18 as compared to 8.65 percent interest rate given to subscribers in 2016-17, and 8.8 percent interest offered in 2015-16. The proposal has been sent to Finance ministry. The proposed rate of EPF interest will be ratified by May or June 2018. Hence it will be reflected late in your UAN passbook.

    • Please check if you meet these requirements
      Passbook will be available after 6 Hours of registration at Unified Member Portal.
      Changes in the credentials at Unified Member Portal will be effective at this Portal after after 6 Hours.
      Passbook will have the entries which has been reconciled at the EPFO field offices.
      Passbook facility will not be available for the Exempted Establishments Members / Settled Members / InOperative Members.

  66. The epfindia is a very poorly maintained application! I am trying the “forgot password” but it throws error – Gender information is not available in the system!
    Looks like they dont test the application before making it public.
    I am completely stuck due to this bug in their system, and there is no way to proceed!
    What a wasted of public money!
    To add to this, their helpdesk is never reachable, and an email to the contact email BOUNCES BACK!

    I have been facing an issue to login using my UAN and password. So I thought I have forgotten my password and tried to reset the same after reading the points you have mentioned above..
    However everytime I do so I get an error message “enter a valid password”
    I have tried entering variations of passwords with special characters and numeric digits and capital letters etc. but still I get the same error.

    Could you suggest what could be the reason for same? I am registered and my UAN is already activated. I have logged on earlier few months back on this portal.

      We can understand your frustration. You can complain on EPF twitter or facebook acsount.
      SINCE PREVIOUS ESTABLISHMENT ID IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE PORTAL,YOU WILl NOT BE ABLE TO TRANSFER CLAIM ONLINE” then you cannot file Transfer online.
      The following are the pre-requisites to file the Transfer Claim online:
      (a) Both previous and present member IDs (P.F. Account No.) should be available in
      EPFO database.
      (b) The employer should have registered the digital signature certificate of his
      authorized signatories with EPFO.

      To transfer offline
      You have to fill up Form 13 and submit it to your present/former employer.
      If you submit to present employer
      Employer requests EPFO, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation
      EPFO team will send documents to your previous employer.
      You must wait till your previous employer approves these documents.
      Employer verifies the form and attests it
      Employer has to submit Annexure K which has your details like service period, deposit amount etc.
      After approval, PF amount gets transferred to your new EPF account.

      This can lead to hassles as there is no way to track your request. There is no way for you to track if the employer had submitted the forms.

      Coming to the second question
      Your PF account existence you can’t check through UAN site.
      You can try know your balance by going to http://www.epfindia.com/site_en/KYEPFB.php
      You would get EPF Balance on SMS Our article EPF Balance SMS :What is EE , What is ER explains it in detail.

    I am need of your help very badly for the below 2 issues.I tried contacting customer care but they never seem to respond.Luckily,this site came to my rescue.

    >>> I wanted to transfer my PF from one employer to another,so I started off by logging into EPFO site and checking eligibility, but got the below error
    “SINCE PREVIOUS ESTABLISHMENT ID IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE PORTAL,YOU WILl NOT BE ABLE TO TRANSFER CLAIM ONLINE”. What should i do about this sir/madam?

    >Next i wanted to check if my PF ACCOUNT exists in UAN site,Unfortunately i do not know my password.I proceeded by clicking on FORGOT PASSWORD and CHANGING MOBILE NUMBER(as the number was incorrect).This attempt was unsuccessful as well,i got an error as MEMBER VERIFICATION FAILED. What should i do about this sir/madam?

    It really sucks to know that government is not taking any steps on such important sites and there is no proper customer care.
    Hope i find a solution for the issues atleast here.

    Thanks for an informative article. Need a help on logging in to “http://112.133.230.60:9098/MemberPassBook/LoginServlet” to see the balance. However the password I’m providing is not the correct one (as it throws error). However I use the same UAN and the password to login to “https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/”portal successfully. Not sure what’s the password I should provide for the passbook portal. JFYI, I also changed my password just to try that. but it didn’t help either. Please help.

  92. Unable to reset Password, Each time error shows failed to change password. All procedure followed but not able to reset.. is their any other way to reset password.

    • You need to have at least 2 special characters, 2 numbers, 1 uppercase letter in your password and the password should be more than 7 characters in length.
