I  have forgotten my UAN Password , my mobile number has changed, What do I do now? On trying to Activate UAN I get message Mismatch in UAN and Member ID. What does it mean? My DOB in UAN is wrong. What should I do?

How to solve Common UAN problems?

Earlier EPF website had UAN HelpDesk to help one with Common UAN Related problems. Since Feb-Mar 2018 UAN Helpdesk does not exist on EPF website as EPFO has provided other ways to update the information.

What is my UAN

Know Your UAN status if you know your Member Id,PAN or Aadhaar  explains the process in detail.

  • Go the UAN Portal https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ 
  • Click on the button ‘Know your UAN Status’
  • Select whether you want to enter PF number or Member Id or PAN or Aadhaar.
  • If you Select  Member Id then you have to choose State and Office and enter your Member Id.(You can get the PF number/member ID from your salary slip. )
  • Enter other details such as name, date of birth, mobile no, captcha code.
  • Click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’.
  • You will receive a PIN on your mobile number. Enter the PIN and click on ‘Validate OTP and get UAN’ button.
  • You will see a message that Your UAN number and status will be sent to your mobile number.

Forgot Password and Mobile No is changed

 UAN gives the facility of changing the mobile number if you have forgotten the password and your mobile number has changed without going through UAN Helpdesk. Our article Change Mobile Number in UAN if forgotten Password and Mobile Number Changed talks about it in detail. This works only if Your Name, Date of Birth and Gender matches.

Incorrect Details in UAN

If you tried to link your Aadhaar with your UAN and were unable to do because of mismatch in Name, Date of Borth(DOB) or Gender in UAN data and Aadhaar data then you can use the new functionality provided in the UAN portal to update details. EPF Passbook problem

To see the EPF UAN passbook now you would have to go to  >> Our Services >> For Employees >> Member Passbook and login with your UAN website details. If you work in organization that has exempted trust like Infosys, Wipro etc then your EPF passbook will not be at EPF website. You need to contact your employer.

Details not matching during UAN activation

Please contact your employer to find the details.

Claim Status [ PF, Transfer, PENSION, Etc]

Go to EPFO website ,Click on Our Services->Employees, select Know Your Claim Status.

Enter your UAN & Captcha and hit Enter. you will see PF Account list which associated with the specific UAN.

If you click on the link from where you have transferred the account, in our case BGB002000000000003, you would see your transfer details.

Overview of  UAN

  • The UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each Employee Provident Fund member  by the Employee Provident Fund  Organization(EPFO) which gives him control of his EPF account and minimises the role of employer.
  • Member Id or Member Identification Numbers is the number given by EPFO to allow the employer to submit EPF money of employee. If one changes the job, employer changes, hence Member ID change. Member ID or PF Account Number is in the format given below. PF Account Number may not have Extension code. EPFO Office Code/Establishment Code(Max. 7 Digits)/Extension(Max. 3 digits)/Account Number (Max 7 digit) Ex:BG/BNG/012345//789.
  • An employee will have one UAN or Universal Account number, which as the name implies will remain the same. It will maintain all your Member Ids.  Its like you can have multiple Saving Bank account but all these are tied to your one Permanent Account Number or PAN. So when you change your job and the new employer, if contributing to EPF, gives you a new Member ID. This new Member ID has to be linked to your UAN number.
  • Once you receive the Universal account number or UAN from your employer, you have to log on to the official website http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in.   • Advantages of Registering with UAN are that once you login at the UAN portal,http://uanmembers.epfoservices.in, you can:
    • You can Download Passbook/UAN Card,
    • You can List Previous Member ID/View Linking Status,
    • You can File Transfer Claim/View Transfer Claim Status/System Generated Transfer Claim Status,

UAN HelpDesk: Not operational in 2018

Employee Provident Fund  Organization, EPFO has updated  it’s website http://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/. There is a the Hindi website of EPFO also which one can access. Now EPFO  had UAN HelpDesk to help one with Common UAN Related problems. However, the UAN HelpDesk is not fully functional but it works.

  • SMS Not received during UAN Activation

Does UAN HelpDesk work?

We submitted three genuine requests, given below. We received response to the one request the same day.

1. Transfer of EPS on Transfer of EPF from one company to another :One of us had transferred the EPF from earlier company to new company. While EPF withdrawal was done there was no information about EPS withdrawal.

We had asked about EPS transfer and the response we got the same day after submitting our request was as follows

“WHILE TRANSFERRING PF FROM ONE ESTABLISHMENT TO ANOTHER, THE SERVICE DETAILS INFORMATION (VIZ LENGTH OF SERVICE, NON-CONTRIBUTORY PERIOD, LAST WAGES DRAWN ETC) ARE FURNISHED TO THE RECEIVING PF OFFICE IN ANNEXURE-K WHICH WILL BE USED TO CALCULATE PENSION BENEFITS.  AMOUNT IN PENSION FUND IS NOT REQ”.

 2. Change of Name : Name in UAN was not correct.

3. Not able to link UAN allotted by previous employer

On Clicking UAN HelpDesk it takes you to screen shown below, which shows the UAN Toll free number  18001-18005, Best viewed in Chrome Browser.

You can select any problem , say Forgot Password and Mobile No is Changed,  the screen shown is below

The screen for incorrect details such as Name, Father’s Name or Date of Birth(DOB)  is as follows

Fill in the appropriate details such as your name, father’s name, date of birth PF member ID, mobile number and your problem. Click on Generate OTP(One Time Password). If you get error once ex XML http etc ignore it and try again. The OTP would be sent to your mobile number.  For me it came within minutes.

After verification , submit the Form. The reference number is generated as shown below. The reference number is also sent to the mobile number.

The offline mode for UAN  & EPF  problems

The current method that exists for UAN and EPF Problems is to submit application through the employer to EPFO office. Excerpts from the FAQ for Employers (pdf). Another Useful document is FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS for Members(Pdf)

Q.13 What is the method to correct the member’s details if appearing wrongly on UAN generated?

For any change/correction in the member’s details, member has to apply first for the same through employer only along with supporting documents. Afterwards, employer has to contact the concerned EPFO Field Office for change in member’s details alongwith supporting documents.

Q.30 What is the procedure for correction in Name in EPFO Database?

EPFO has made a provision for change the name of EPF members in the application software.Members who wish to get their name to be changed inthe EPF Database can apply for the same through their employer to the concerned local EPFO office alongwithsupporting documents. In this regard a circular hasalready been issued to thefield offices mentioning the supporting documents and the processflow.

Q.32 Whether the present employer is allowed to link the previous member id based on the information furnished by the member through form 11 even if there is difference in date of birth or even if the details with previous employer is in-complete or there is mismatch?.

The validation of date of birth has been kept to ensure that the linking with UAN takes place for the correct member only. Any dilution in this validation might lead to linking of wrong member ids.

Q.33 Whether the member can correct his date of birth or to furnish the missing information of previous employment particulars through the present employer.

No, the correction in date of birth in the previous employment can be made through the previous employer only

    • The Employer entered the date of birth which does not match the one you are trying.
      If you can login to UAN site then see the DOB given there.
      Else ask your employer for the DOB entered in UAN.
      If you want later you can submit request to EPFO through your employer for updating the DOB.

    • There is no procedure to deactivate the UAN but the merging of UAN numbers is possible.
      Have you withdrawn or transferred the PF account associated with First UAN number?

  28. I received the UAN number NOT ACTIVE, I could not see the DOB, passbook is not showing up as my company has a private PF trust. I followed the process by submitting the correction letter through my employer to EPPF department. Its been 45 days the correction of BATE OF BIRTH has not been done. Meanwhile i resigned and currently in notice period. Wanted to know while the correction is taking time by the EPF office, when i join the new company and provide my UAN number , can the new company link the new member id with my UAN number even if the correction of details have not taken place.     I have two UAN but my current and all PF Number associate with my current UAN no except last employer PF number, which is generated by employer by mistake and associate with PF no in earlier it was correct with same employer.

    I need to transfer my PF to my current PF, Please let me know whether i can transfer PF directly or need to tell last employer to correct my UAN no which was earlier.

    • Try “One Employee One EPF Account” facility available in the EPF portal Go to Our Services-> For employees
      Click on One Employee One EPF Account.
      Or you can transfer your old EPF account to new EPF account.
      This can be done ONLINE
      The EPFO’s system would then automatically identify such cases where the EPF transfer has been effected from one EPF account to another and have two different UANs attached to these EPF accounts of the same employee. This is as said automatic one and will be processed on a periodic basis.
      All such identified old EPF UAN numbers, from which EPF transfer has been effected to EPF account having different EPF UAN (new EPF UAN), will be deactivated. After this, the old UAN numbers will cease to exist and are blocked for further use.
      Do let us know what worked for you?

    • You can still claim your EPF by submitting FORm without UAN
      PF Withdrawal Offline
      Submit EPF Withdrawal forms(with UAN or without UAN) to employer or EPFO.
      Fill Form 15G to avoid TDS deduction.
      Attach a cancelled cheque leaf of the account mentioned in the Forms.
      Revenue Stamps Re. 1 each are required to be affixed on the forms and duly signed. (Not available in Karnataka so just sign in the location where it has been requested for revenue stamp)
      EPFO normally takes around 20 days to process your claim.
      Track EPF Withdrawal
      You will get SMS updates
      You’ll receive two different amounts in your account. One is for your EPF withdrawal and one is for Pension contribution.
      Check out your tax liability.

      Raise the grievance .
      Complain about grievance on social media. EPFO on 1 st Nov said It was also stressed upon that the grievances on the social media needs to be replied expeditiously.

      • Yes Forgot Login works if you have your UAN (Universal Account Number) and registered mobile number. You can then retrieve the username and password on your mobile.

    I Got the login ID for the UAN Portal. I am able to view my balance, I am able to download my passbook. But I just wanted to take some money, so I filled the form and I submitted it to the PF office here in Chennai.

    • Sadly there is no portal for helpdesk for UAN helpdesk.
      You can try social media websites of EPFO, we are not sure how well they work. If they do ,please do share your experience

      Try using their social media accounts.

    Yesterday (18/04/2016) evening I have registered the online complaint through UAN helpdesk as I forget password and mobile number is changed and I got the reference number. Today (19/04/2016) morning got the sms from EPF office “The request for mobile change has been successfully processed”.

      • I tried to update my new mobile number, I got OTP late and I was unable to enter that time. I re entered all the details, generated the OTP again, now it says “Invalid UAN” and I am sure I entered the correct UAN. I copied and pasted from my email when I tried both the times.       EPFO is working on having things done fast but at times it takes long time.

    • EPFO has made a provision for change the name of EPF members. Members who wish to get their name/Fathers name/Date of Birth to be changed in the EPF Database can apply for the same through their employer along with supporting documents. One can read EPF Circular for change in name

  109. I had put a request for PF transfer from my old organization.

    My current employer had created a new PF account and put a request for a new UAN number generation, 3 months ago.
    But till now UAN number has not been created for my PF number.
    When I check the status it is giving me the message: “Request for UAN for this Member Id xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is already under process.(through ECR)”.

    Please help me out.

    • Hi. if you have pf no then you can create your own UAN no online. For that Go to the portal uanmembers.epfoservices.in. Click on ‘Know your UAN status.’

    • If you are joining job for first time you would not have a UAN number. You tell your employer and he will submit the request for generation of UAN number for you to EPFO.
      Only those who have been contributing to EPF since Jan 2014 have UAN number generated for them.

      We have discussed what is UAN number etc in our article UAN or Universal Account Number and Registration of UAN
      The UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each Employee Provident Fund member by the Employee Provident Fund Organization(EPFO) which gives him control of his EPF account and minimises the role of employer.
      How was UAN number alloted?

      Universal account number or UAN has been allotted to each PF member by the EPFO by converting the existing account numbers of employees who have contributed in EPFO through electronic challan-cum-return from January to June 2014. The details of UAN allotted to each PF member have been provided to employer and the employer has to download and communicate it to the employee concerned. You can use the link EPFO:Check UAN Status to verify whether UAN is allotted to you or not.

    • Hi. if you have pf no then you can create your own UAN no online. For that Go to the portal uanmembers.epfoservices.in. Click on ‘Know your UAN status.’

    • My employer has given recently my UAN no. and tried to activate UAN.

      But it is not been activated. Whenever I tries to activate, it says:

      I raised ticket. They told “ UAN is already allotted, and activated, but with a different mobile no.”

      But I haven’t activated.

      Then I raised further ticket in uan help desk to change my mobile no. with whatever already registered which is not done by me.

    • If you have UAN login you can change the mobile number. You need to go to Profile Menu in Member Portal and select an option ‘Edit Mobile No.’/ ‘Edit Email ID’ for changing mobile number and email id respectively.
      Sir if you don’t have the UAN account please try the UAN helpdesk.

    • Now EPFO also has UAN HelpDesk which is to help one with Common UAN Related problems. Please go through steps mentioned and let us know was it able to help you

  123. Whenever I have been trying to activate my UAN based registration, I end up receiving the following message.

    I never get the Authorization PIN on my Mobile number. No clue on how to get around this particular issue.

    • Did you try the HelpDesk? Please try the HelpDesk and select the option SMS not received during UAN activation.
      Please do let us know if you are able to get UAN activated. It would help other readers

  124. The forgot password where the registered mobile no has changed- in this case for me the steps provided above worked where I filled in the form,got the otp generated on my new mobile number. In a weeks time I got a Sms from BT-EPFOHO with a link to the websit where i logged in with my new mobile no. The system generated password was sent to my mobile number and i was able to log in to UAN again…..this works. Thanks to the one who shared this.

    Can you please tell how to chaNGE MY MOBILE NO, AS THE PREVIOUS EMPLOYER HAS ACTIVATED MY UAN THROUGH A DIFFErent mobile no which has been out of service for long.

  128. I have been working for IT company for last 15 years. I received the UAN number however my name, father name was incorrect. I could not see the DOB, passbook is not showing up as my company has a private PF trust. I followed the process by submitting the correction letter through my employer to EPPF department. Its been 15 days the correction of name and father name has not been done. Meanwhile i resigned and currently in notice period. Wanted to know while the correction is taking time by the EPF office, when i join the new company and provide my UAN number , can the new company link the new member id with my UAN number even if the correction of details have not taken place. How can i get it done.?

    It shows while activating uan that my mobile number is registered but I am not receiving the PIN for the activation.

    I have raised a request online 2 times but I have not got any revert on the same.

  132. my UAN no: 100246481783. so my date of birth is not entered at the time UAN creation.so how to entered UAN and how to rectify this problem. i traied already through help desk. it shows java script error and traied thorgh help desk no 18001-18005. its is also not working properly .plz rectify this problem. my date of birth is 02-06-1979. i already mailed to uanepf@epfindia.gov.in with date of birth prof

    • You try the offline method. For any change/correction in the member’s details, member has to apply first for the same through employer only along with supporting documents. Afterwards, employer has to contact the concerned EPFO Field Office for change in member’s details alongwith supporting documents.

    • Did you use another Mobile number while activating UAN.
      Try with other mobile number else
      try contacting online , as explained in article

  135. My Name was wrong in EPFO records, so applied for change of name with local epfo office. As per Epfo reply they have corrected name in their records. but in UAN Pass book name showing still wrong. how it is Possible???

    • You are right UAN passbook should be updated with correct name.
      You can raise the issue at UAN helpdesk as explained in article.

          • One should not have 2 UAN numbers.
            You cannot register same mobile number for UAN.
            In case two UAN are allotted to you, this could be because of not filing of Date of Exit by your previous
            employer in ECR filing and/or you have applied for transfer of service in your current establishment.
            In such a case, you are suggested to immediately report the matter either to your employer and through email
            to uanepf@epfindia.gov.in by mentioning, both – your current UAN and your previous UAN(s). After due
            verification, the previous UAN(s) allotted to you will be blocked and the current UAN will be kept active. Later
            you will be required to submit a Claim to get transfer of service and fund to the current UAN.

          My UAN No.100710609002 PF no. BG/BNG/0023926/0001216. but at the time of UAN login but the verification failed .My mobile no.97118674. Please assist me and get me UAN passwrod to access my EPFO account
