Asian Paints says “Har ghar kuch kehta hain”. Govinda in hindi movie of 1980,Dulara, crooned “Meri shirt bhi sexy, meri pant bhi sexy…mein bhi sexy hoon.”(to see the song on Youtube click here) When the women in RIN ads says, “Bhala uski kameez merikameez se safed kaise? (‘How is his shirt whiter than mine?) Is she not just referring to the soap, but does she also mean that why she is better than me? So do things really say something about who owns them? I tried to discover : Kya mera gadget mere baare mein kuch kehta hain?
My morning starts with reading newspaper while sipping a hot cup of tea. I listen to hindi songs on FM on my Philip’s Two-in-one. Two-in-one is an electronic equipment with Tape Recorder and Radio (something like ek ke saath ek muft muft muft). Two in one was a great craze in the mid 1990’s. We used to buy cassettes and have our own collection which we got recorded from the Sharma uncle’s music shop in the our colony. I am attached to it as ..it was gifted to by my father when I joined college.
But mera two-in-one kya kehta hai..it says I am old , from the era when Apple was a fruit, when we had one TV channel Doordarshan, When we didn’t live in constant fear of missing updates on Facebook or Twitter. Now days find kids strutting A- Apple, B- Blackberry, C- Chat, D- Download, E- Email, F- Facebook, G- Google, H- HewlettPackard, I- Iphone, J- Java, K- Kingston, L- Laptop, M- Messenger, N- Nero, O- Orkut, P- Picasa, Q- Quicktime, R- RAM, S- Server, T- TouchScreen, U- Usb, V- Vista, W- WiFi, X- XP, Y- YouTube, Z- Zorpia. These Gen Yrs!!
Recently I upgraded my mobile phone. I wanted a touch phone. Blackberry(the phone not the fruit) did not interest me for I thought Blackberry is about the Blackberry Boys. Those who prefer wearing suit to any other form of dress. When I wear suit(which is rarely), I end up singing “Saala mein to Saab ban gaya”.
It’s just not the dress but for the Blackberry boys Life isn’t about play, it’s about emails, finance, making money. Though Vodafone tried to stress the use of Blackberry in daily use for all kind of people singing “We do chat, and we do mail, We do surf, We do all on the move”. Though I loved the advertisement, I was not tempted to buy Blackberry. The news about tussle between Government and RIM regarding share of information added to my decision of not buying a Blackberry.
I am fan of Steve Jobs but against Apple’s closed code policies. Nothing gets on their device unless they approve it. One can download songs-only from itunes, for photos one can only use ‘iphotos’, no usb drive, can’t sync to multiple computers. One ends up saying I this ,I that and I am not a ‘I-man’. I care about this world! If I don’t have an iphone well I don’t have an iphone. But mere paas.. Android LG optimus p500 hain!.
I found value for money in my Android based phone. Android is from Google who changed the way we searched from web, giving us “googol” choices. I can chat, email, surf on the move and also play Angry Birds, have hazaar free apps which I can download and it doesn’t cost a bomb. Remember I am from the generation which had Lalitaji (of Surf) saying “Bhai saab, Aagar itni saari safedi yadee kaam dam me mile to koi yeh kyoun le, yeh na le”
Tu bahiya mere mobile phone yeh kehta hai…I am not a suited-booted guy(but a gentleman -I am great fan of the gentlemen game-cricket) , I am not ‘i-focused’, a rebel , one who moves with time(see I wanted touch phone) and I want value for money!
Few years back I had take a BIG decision for my family. Daunting decision was “Should I buy a Laptop or Desktop computer” My children started getting projects and they just couldn’t wait till I came back from office with my laptop. Laptops are the most convenient computers to use. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want. With a laptop you can connect with a wireless network on the move. Runs on a battery so can be used even when the power is out. But Maintenance is difficult. Repairs cost more. Everything is smaller for it can’t be heavier as I need to take pity on my shoulder and back!(I am not getting any younger :-)). And it is more expensive than a comparable desktop.
I found desktop giving me More bang for the buck. You get better graphics, better monitors, faster processors, etc. Easy to upgrade too. Yes it is stuck in one place but then I felt kids to focus , it was to be placed in kids room and somehow TV and surfing for a project do not go together. So I ended up buying a Dell Studio Hybrid PC stylish, space-saving design built with Slim Tower chassis, the new Dell Studio Slim Desktop PC is powered by 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 and it features …oops it’s becoming too geeky! I am also fan of Dell’s policy of “Yours is here’…selling personal computer systems directly to customers with NO middle men. I understood computers and found sales men a little too pushy! Now as my children are grown up , they want to upgrade to the cool Dell Inspiron with which you can Pop, Click and Switch the lid to reflect time of the day, mood.
Mere PC kya kehta hai..I want value for money, I analyse a lot, I consider myself geek, I am a dedicated family man.
As I sat back after writing the post, I was shocked, surprised to find out that my choices of products really do reflect me. It showed a mirror to ME, REAL ME. When I bought a thing I was saying ALOUD what are my values, what I believe in, what is dear to my heart . I look for a product which reflects me!
Haan Har Product kuch kehta hain,
Owner ki personality bata deta hain!
(Every gadget says, tells the personality of it’s owner)
