Love is a two way street
Love has often been described as a two-way street. Love may just happen but we need to study the rules of the road frequently to be good drivers(else might meet fate of Laila Majnu, Heer Ranjha). When we become careless, we are headed for a wreck! As on any highway, sometimes we have dangers, with warning signs posted along the way. We may not heed or even notice those signs, but that does not minimize any of the dangers we may be approaching. It may be a narrow bridge, in which case we may be facing irritations or conflicts. In such cases, we may have to yield the right of way to avoid a real collision. Dead end streets and head-ons may be found by those who do not realize that driving is a serious business and demand all our attention. A good driver abides by these rules. Most of us are born with good hair but no rule book. We make our own rules as we grow and like anything in life what you sow so you shall reap our mane either becomes shining glory or the bane of your existence.
My Mane My Bane
If love is a two way street then with regards to my hair I was a wreck , lonely on a highway. I had brittle, dry, thin hair with dandruff, split ends. From apple cider vinegar, ointments, balms, butters, and antiseptics, latest shampoos , products, hair treatment to basically anything that anyone recommended to help my hair ! When nothing seemed to be working, I chopped my hair off-short, very short, and my grief was no less than Della (Gift of Magi-O Henry story) when she got her locks chopped off and I didn’t even have the satisfaction of doing it for love. All days were my bad hair days and I gave up on my hair as I got tangled in home, kids, work – what we call life!.
Quest for Healthy, Long, Shining hair
“Is there no way that one can get healthy, black, shining hair,” asked my daughter as she came back from school one day. On questioning found out that in her school on annual day, two months away, “Crowing glory ” -healthy hair competition . She wanted to take part. She wanted to take part badly. A parent always wants to be a super hero/heroine in the eyes of his/her and child would go to any length(even to the extent of making Ra.one) to make his/her child dream come true. So we decided to get down to the root of the problem.
- Throughout the day, hair collects dirt and grime from everything you’re exposed to — pollution, cigarette smoke, dust, etc. Even if you stayed inside all day, you would still have buildup of dead skin cells from your scalp.
- What we think of as oil is actually sebum, a substance produced by glands in the skin of our scalp, which nourishes and protects the hair. However, too much sebum — as you probably guessed — can make hair look oily and clump together
- UV(Ultra violet) rays affect your hair as much as they affect your skin.
- Hair needs a gentle touch-Tender loving touch. Rough towel drying, yanking your comb through your hair, unclean brushes, tight hair bands – all these are devices that unknowingly torture your hair.
-
Oiling hydrates and moisturizes hair and prevents them from becoming rough and frizzy. Oil is good for conditioning of the hair. But it does not play any role in hair growth.(Ref)
- A healthy lifestyle supplemented with proper diet is the magic key for healthy and beautiful hair.
We went through a damage test to find what exactly was wrong with our hair. A similar test is on Dove website. Appearance are deceptive was proved right as though my daughter’s hair looked healthy and shiny she was starting to get dandruff. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices is what we realized and we decided to untangle it.
Winning the other half of the battle
We had won half the battle identifying damage, now we had to win the other half by implementing the suggestions.
- Regular shampooing: Wash hair every other day. Washing removes buildup from your hair and scalp, excess sebum along with other dirt particles, leaving hair feeling fresh and clean again. Washing hair too often can overdry the hair from the astringents in most shampoos; it can also cause an overproduction of sebum, which makes hair extra oily.
- Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize: Conditioner is a key hair product necessary for moisturizing and maintaining soft, healthy hair. Conditioning helps create an artificial protective layer on hair to prevent moisture loss and further wear and tear to hair. Use a professional conditioner that is formulated for your specific hair type.
- Regular visits: Keep your appointments. Did you know that your hair will split faster than it will grow? You need to get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks, even if it’s just a micro trim. A good hairdresser makes them good because they know what to leave on the head, not take off.
- Good products: Choose the products with care. You cannot pick any brush /shampoo/conditioner/hair color/hairdresser. Don’t take your hair(and body) for granted. Treat it like a temple. One cannot be penny wise and pound foolish. The product should not only make your hair look good but also healthy. If a slighlty expensive shampoo will make your hair look good and healthy..isn’t it worth it? A dress less may work but …hair in head is worth two in brush!!
-
Healthy Lifestyle: Eeating a well balanced diet with plenty of protein and exercise and water is the key for vibrant, healthy you and your hair.
Wow Moment
Journey is still on
It is foolish to tear one’s hair in grief, as though sorrow would be made less by baldness. When it comes to caring for our hair, ignorance is the most powerful enemy we battle. Just like in life what you sow you shall reap, what you give you shall get for, love is a two way street, love your hair and it would love you back!

Personal care products in India have shown healthy growth even during the economic recession. If we may remember, a few years ago nobody expected a product like deodrant to sell so well in India. India is a unique market, where the global product sell wonderfully well along with the traditional ayurvedic personal care products.
Yes you are right..people don’t mind spending on things such as deodrants which our parents would call frivolous.
Cool post and best of luck with the competition. Please find my posts here:
