Name in PAN Card, Passport, Aadhaar, Indian naming system

Whiling filing form for applying PAN and Passport people have a problem filling First Name, Middle Name and Surname if their name has initials. This article looks at the Instructions for Filing PAN, Passport. It then looks at the naming conventions in different parts of India.

Though William Shakespear had said Whatis in a name?” A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” is the play Romeo and Juliet, for official purposes it is better to have one name across all your official documents like PAN, Aadhaar, Passport etc.

Filing Name in form for Applying PAN

PAN or permanent account number, is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identity, in the form of a laminated card, allotted to each taxpayer by the Income Tax Department. It enables the department to link all financial transactions of the person with the department. PAN cards are issued by the I-T department, but the front-end of the process has been outsourced to UTI Technology Services Ltd and the National Securities Depository Ltd(NSDL) since July 2003. One can apply for PAN either online i.e. through internet or offline. Our article What is PAN Card ? discusses it in detail. What is PAN Card ? discusses it in detail.

Instructions for filing the name are

  • Please select an appropriate title.
  • Do not use abbreviations in the First and the Last name/Surname.
  • A PAN Card cannot have any name(first name, middle name or family name) exceeding 25 characters. There are 25 boxes for each name in the printed form.
  • For Parents Name, rules for name to be followed are same as Individual’s name
    • Father’s Name: It is mandatory for Individual applicants to provide father’s name. Married woman applicant should also give father’s name and not husband’s name.
    • Mother’s Name: This is an optional field.
    • The appropriate flag should be selected to indicate the name (out of the father’s name and mother’s given in the form) to be printed on the PAN card. If no option is selected, then father’s name is considered for printing on the PAN card.

To get the PAN card with a single name. You have to write your name in the place of Surname and leave first and middle name blank.

‘First Word’ of his name will be the ‘First Name’ of the applicant but a single alphabet and two alphabets (except above 90) as ‘First Name’ are not allowed. For Example – An individual has the name ‘Kailash Chandra Rambilas Maheshwari’. In that case, First Name will be only ‘Kailash’ and not the ‘Kailash Chandra’. Likely, if the applicant has the name “K. C. Maheshwari, then ‘K’ as first name will not be allowed.

Name in Passport

An Indian passport is a passport issued by the Government of India to citizens of the Republic of India for travelling abroad. It enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as proof of Indian citizenship as per the Passports Act (1967).

The name up to 75 characters long name can be given and filled in the form. Reference

  • No initials should be written, they should be expanded.
  • No honorifics, titles such as Major, Doctor etc should be written.
  • Surname could have two words like Roy Choudhary or Das Gupta.

In case you do not have a surname, just write the given name. Some Embassies (Embassy of U.S.A., etc.) insist on surname for the issue of visa. Empty (or blank) Surname in Passport equals TROUBLE.

The full name as it should appear in the Passport should be furnished here.

  • For example, for name: ADITYA NAGENGRANATH GOGOI Write the Surname as “GOGOI” in the boxes provided for Surname and put a comma and write “ADITYA NAGENGRANATH” as the Given name in the rest of the columns.
  • For instance, if you have filled in your surname as J A I N and your given name as P I Y U S H K U M A R , the same will appear on your passport as:  Surname: JAIN Given Name: PIYUSH KUMAR

Name in Aadhar

Aadhaar is becoming an important document to have. It is needed almost everywhere. Our article What is Aadhaar, How to enrol,Check Aadhaar status,Download e Aadhaar talks about how to get Aadhaar.

Aadhar takes the name with initials. All it requires is Proof of Identity which can be any of the documents

How should you have name in PAN, Aadhaar, Passport

Try to stick to one name and use it same across all your official documents. If you have First Name and Surname then life is simple. If you have the name with initials then you need to choose.

For Raman M V which can be extended to Raman Murli Vishwakarma usually following combinations might be in Birth Certificate, College Marksheets: Raman MV, MV Raman , Raman V (or Murli Raman Vishwakarma )

Name in Passport can have following three combinations.

  • Combination 1:
    • Given Name – Raman
    • Middle Name – Murli
    • Surname – Vishwakarma
  • Combination 2:
    • Given Name – Raman Murli
    • Middle Name – Empty
    • Surname – Vishwakarma
  • Combination 3: Of all the above 3 possibilities, this one is the most problematic. As long as you have Surname in your passport, you will not have MAJOR problems if planning to study abroad especially in the US. If there is no surname in your passport, stop right here and get your name changes in your passport first before going forward with any application or study abroad process.
    • Given Name – Raman M V
    • Middle Name – Empty
    • Surname – Empty

Indian Names in different regions

Indian names are based on a variety of systems and naming conventions, which vary from region to region. Names are also influenced by religion and caste and may come from epics.   Confusions and complications arise when we are asked to fill in various official forms in our country – first name, middle name, last name, surname, This makes for subtle, often confusing, differences in names and naming styles. For example, the concept of a family name does not exist widely in Tamil Nadu.

For some Indians, their birth name is different from their official name; the birth name starts with a letter auspicious on the basis of the person’s horoscope (based on the nakshatra or lunar mansion corresponding to the person’s birth). Reference Wikipedia Indian name

In the northern states, the full name would be the given name followed by the family name. For example, a child born to Kapoor family is given the name Ranbir, then his full name would be Ranbir Kapoor.

In the western states, like Gujrat and Maharashtra, father’s given name is also added to child’s name. For example, Jigar, son of Manohar, belonging to Joshi family would be called Jigar Manohar Joshi or Jigar M. Joshi. Interestingly the family name can be traced back to the early Aryan and Dravidian tribal settlers created to demarcate professions and divisions. For example, Joshi in the above example belongs to the early astrologer community. Iyengar is a subdivision of the Brahim class who worship Vishnu.

The family names of Telugu’s precede the given name and are mostly abbreviated. For example, the name Kambham Nagarjuna Rao would be abbreviated as K.N. Rao. In this name, Nagarjuna Rao is the given name, and Kambham would be the family name (surname).

Bengali Hindu names have the format of given name, middle name, and family name. In casual conversation, people may omit middle names. The middle name is not the father’s name.  Ex  Subhas Chandra Bose or Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Kashmiri names often have the following format: given name, middle name (optional), family name. For example Jawahar Lal Nehru

In Karnataka, naming is usually done in this pattern: Village name, Given Name, Title/Surname or Given Name, Father’s name, Title/Surname

In Kerala, names have the format: Family/House name (optional), father’s name, given name. E.g.: A K Antony: Arackaparambil (House Name) Kurian Pillai (Father’s Name with a title) Antony (First Name). Another practice observed is where spouses and children take on the first name of the father as their last or surname.

In Kerela in the Malabar region the format followed is: Family name, Given name, Caste/title name (if applicable). Therefore, Kannott Karunakaran Marar, can be interpreted as Karunakaran of the Marar caste from the Kannoth family.

Punjabi names often have the following format: given name, middle name (optional), family name. For example: Harmanpreet Singh Mattu

In Tamil Nadu, Names follow this pattern: Initial (Village name), Initial (Father’s name), Given Name, Caste name Example: E.V. Ramasamy Naicker, where E stands for Erode, and V stands for the father’s name. There is a widespread usage of a patronym (use of the father’s given name as the second name).  This means that the given name of one generation becomes the second name of the next. In many cases, the father’s name appears as an initial and thus the given name may be presented as a second name. When written in full , for example, on a passport, the initial is expanded as the last name. For example, a name like R. Ramesh or Ramesh R., will be written in full as Ramesh Ramaiah, and refers to Ramesh son of Ramaiah. If Ramesh then has a son named Ashvin, then his name would be R. Ashwin or Ashwin Ramesh. For example; G. Venkatesan, Venkatesan G, or Venkatesan Govindarajan, are different ways in which a person with a given name Venkatesan, whose father’s given name is Govindarajan can refer to himself. And when Venkatesan has a child, say the child has a name Murugan, it will become V. Murugan

There is also a general custom for Tamil women to adopt their husband’s given name as their second name. Sunitha Saravanan (Sunitha daughter of Saravanan) might change her name to Sunitha Ram Kumar (Sunitha wife of Ram Kumar) after marriage. However, these customs vary from family to family

People who do not understand the Tamil naming protocol sometimes expand the initials in an incorrect manner. For example, the name P. Chidambaram, tends to be expanded to Palaniyappan Chidambaram, which is incorrect in the sense that it implies that the person’s given name is “Palaniyappan”, and the family name is “Chidambaram”. In fact, the person’s only name is “Chidambaram”, with an initial of “P”. Other such famous misrepresentations include the chess grandmaster, V. Anand wrongly expanded as Vishwanathan Anand cricketer, L. Sivaramakrishnan Laxman is his father’s name and the freedom fighter and statesman, C. Rajagopalachari often cited as Chakravarty Rajagopalachari. On the other hand, north India media refers to Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss (son of Dr. Ramadoss) often simply as Dr Ramadoss, which again is incorrect as Ramadoss is his father’s name and not his name.

The Tamil Nadu government had been taken many efforts to wipe out the caste system in the past. Social reformer E.V.R. Periyar had launched Suya Mariyathai Iyakkam for the task. He called for not using caste names as surnames during his birth centenary celebration in 1979-80.  CM M.G. Ramachandran had also ordered the removal of caste names tagged to street names. There has been no use of surnames with ‘casteist’ connotations for almost 50–60 years.

Women name and marriage

For women, the system of family name/surname/initials is slightly different. Before marriage, a girl uses her father’s family name or initial, but after marriage, she may choose to use her husband’s family name or initial. Of late the trend has changed and many women, especially those employed, do not change the initials but continue with their father’s family name or initials. This is mainly for convenience since school degree and career papers have the woman’s father’s initials on them. Changing a name legally is a cumbersome procedure, including announcing the proposed change in a newspaper and getting it published in an official gazette. They have to change all their names on their passports, bank accounts, driving licence, etc. The modern trend is to add the husband’s name/family name at the end, like some Western women who add their husband’s name with a hyphen.

In India, not only are women automatically expected to adopt their husband’s surname when they get married, but in some communities, as in Maharashtra, they are also expected to change their first names. As a result, once married, their identity changes completely. It is almost as if getting married also means wiping off your previous identity and completely subsuming yourself in one chosen by your husband and his family.

  2. This blog is so confusing again. not helping much to provide first name and last name for Pan & different govt ID proof.

Generally we must be having a same name in all proof like Aadhar, pan, passport etc.

Firstname & lastname step in this blog is so confusing and it is not following similar naming for all govt proof (Aadhar,Pan, passport, etc).

As far as I experienced, it would be good if we follow the same name that we mentioned in the passport to all other documents, that will make our life easier.

  8. sir my name is HRISHAB T H (FORMAT IN ALL MY CERTIFICATES). i’am native to kerala but born and brought up in banglore my name in aadhar card is also hrishab t h, but when i try to fill the application for PAN card it asks for

first name : which i gave hrishab
middle name : i gave nothing
    surname : T H
but it does not accept this format with space then i tried giving it as T.H but still no use

then i found out that the certificates use initials and not entire name, so they are abbreviation for the rest of the name

so T stands for the house name (passed through the family)
and H stands for my dad’s name

now how do i give my name to make a pan card and should i also change the name on the aadhaar card as well to the format you prescribe ?
and as of now i am studying and i will be applying for passport in the future as well so how should the name be like

My name is Gamya A Kambham. In all my academic certificates, my name is Gamya A Kambham. But in Aadhar , pan card and voter id it is K A Gamya. I am thinking to apply for passport. Kindly suggest the name to be used for passport.

    • What do you need the passport for?
      Travel or studies outside?
If it is for studies then you should try to have as in academic certificates
Try to stick to one name and use it same across all your official documents.
If you have First Name and Surname then life is simple.
If you have the name with initials then you need to choose.

The name up to 75 characters long name can be given and filled in the form. Reference

Surname could have two words like Roy Choudhary or Das Gupta.

For instance, for the name used above,

  16. My Old passport had my FIRST Name and Last Name, However all my other Documents Have First Name Middle(Just Initial not Full Name) and Last Name. Now during the time of renewal it is not being accepted, Can you please advise how do I go about it can i just do the Affidavit and publish in newspapers with First Name Middle Name (Just Initial as it is on my Aadhar and PAN) and Last Name or do I need to change it on all documents to Full Middle Name. Kindly advise the best and fastest option.

    • You should stick to one name preferably one in Aadhar and PAN.
To change the name in the passport, you have to apply for a “Re-issue” of passport and get the specified change done in the personal particulars. To check the complete list of documents to be submitted along with the application form, please click on “Documents Required” link on Home page.
So your documents seem to be in order.
Who is not accepting the name and what reason are they giving?

      • The reason they tell me during renewal is my passport only has First Name and Last Name while my aadhar and PAN has Middle initial in it, hence the issue.

Secondly now they are asking for full Middle name I have 2 boys and both of them have Just middle Initial in Aadhar and Birth Certificate will that also be a problem.

Kindly advise on both these issues.

  26. Sir,
My name in all my educational certificate is without my surname but in my passport, aadhar card and voter card my name is written with surname. Will it cause any problem while applying for study visa in abroad??

    • Name mismatch between a passport and certificates not a major problem.
As long as you have a Surname in your passport, you will not have problem
GRE, TOEFL, GMAT (or other exams) – Book dates based on the name in passport, not documents. Use the name as provided in the passport.
College Application – Use the name as per passport. Remember that name in your passport will be your identity.
Going forward to use the name “as-is” from your passport. It’s absolutely ok to have different names from your degree certificates. The only university is going to use your certificates, but every other department is going to use your passport. That’s one of the reason, you have to include a copy of the passport front page with your application documents.

While filling out the college application, you will see a question (or similar)

List other names used in your application documents.
You would have to enter various names used in your documents. If there is no such question, attach the additional page to list the various names in different documents. That document must clearly state that documents submitted along with the application will have the following names, which will be different from the the name in the passport.

  27. My Name is ABHISHEK only in all my document like 10th,12th,and B.TECH also

I want to apply for pan card and passport. What should i do? either expand the intials in adhaar and apply for pan and passport…. But i don’t have any supporting documents for expanding my initials…..
If i expand my intials, and applied for pan and passport… My academic name would remain same as sunil pk…..
Can this will create any problem….. Suggest me something please….

    • An Indian passport is a passport issued by the Government of India to citizens of the Republic of India for travelling abroad. It enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as proof of Indian citizenship as per the Passports Act (1967).

The name up to 75 characters long name can be given and filled in the form. Reference

No initials should be written, they should be expanded.
No honorifics, titles such as Major, Doctor etc should be written.
Surname could have two words like Roy Choudhary or Das Gupta.
In case you do not have a surname, just write the given name. Some Embassies (Embassy of U.S.A., etc.) insist on surname for the issue of visa. Empty (or blank) Surname in Passport equals TROUBLE.

Nice to know that you are thinking about it the name problem from now only.
Please stick to one name and give that one in Aadhaar.
In the current name Shivani Arasan
Shivani would be taken as First Name
Arasan as Last Name or Family Name
Hope that is fine with your family?
      where do you stay?

      • My question is what will be her name in passport? Will it be “Shivani Arasan” or “Shivani Arasan Thennarasan”?

        • Hi Thennarasan. The government does not decide what name your daughter has in her passport. It is you who has to decide. You can decide to call her “Shivani Arasan” and provide that while applying for her passport. Thus her Surname can be “Arasan” and given name will be “Shivani” if you like it that way in the passport.

  40. In all the educational certificates and Adhar card, my name is mentioned as “Dipu H”. In passport the initial, “H” is expanded as surname “Haridas”. So in passport my Name is “Dipu” and surname is “Haridas”. Will this cause a problem during my L1 processing? My wife is planning to add spouse name in her passport. Should she mention “Dipu H” or “Dipu Haridas”. In marriage certificate also my name is mentioned as “Dipu H”. Please advice

    Thanks,
    Dipu H

    • You would have to choose one name and stick to it.
As most of your documents are in Dipu H you might be asked why is it Dipu Haridas in your passport?
What proof do you have of Dipu Haridas?
What name do you have on your PAN card and in office

      • Pan card also Dipu Haridas. In Pan card and passport they accepted only after expanding the initials.

In all school and college certificates and Adhar, it is just “Dipu H”.

        • Yes, PAN card has the issue.

Your wife should have the same spouse name as your passport.
Regarding L1 visa it depends on the person approving. So one is not sure how things go.
You can talk to your company and maybe take a letter on company head that you are same name,
or make an affadivat of one and the same name.

        • Hi Dipu,

Did your issue get this issue resolved? I have a similar kind of issue where my marriage certificate the name is mentioned as Prakash V and I need to add my name in my wife’s passport. Were you able to add the spouse name to your wife’s pasport.

  49. Hi,
My name is Rohit Singh V which appears the same in my 10th, 12th, degree certificate & in my PAN & AADHAR cards as well as in my EPFO data base too, during my EPF claim the PAN database happens to appear my name as “Vikram Singh Rohit Singh“ and the PAN vendor suggested me to change my name to Rohit V Singh from Rohit Singh V & I presume that my name needs to be changed in all my documents including my 10th, 12th, degree certificate, PAN & AADHAR cards as well as in my EPFO data, hence I need to know is there any way to change my name in PAN database without doing any changes to my prior set of documents or in my coming future for my passport.
    Thank You in advance.

    • Problem would only be in EPFO where PAN verification will fail in either case Rohit V Singh or Vikram Singh Rohit Singh
Can you try your EPF claim offline?
in PAN you are never allowed to abbreviate your surname online.
You are allowed to abbreviate either you middle name or both your first name and middle name.
Hence your PAN vendor suggested Rohit V Singh.
Can you try the PAN Facilitation centre in offline mode. It seems in In offline mode, you can get the PAN card with initial
You should stick to name in Aadhaar which happens to be in all your other documents too.
Changing name in PAN for your case is not possible still.

We expect EPFO to come up with a solution soon. We have raised a Change.org petition which you can check and sign here.

      • Hi,
Thank you for your prompt response I inquired PAN office offline and their quick reply is as per the IT department name should appear (FIRST, MIDDLE & SURNAME OR LAST NAME) that is in my case it should be ROHIT VIKRAM SINGH. So, the only option is to try the EPFO office offline, as well as I had a question is it better to change the name to IT department so that the passport as well as for visa would not effect in the future.

  50. Hi, My name is Rohit Singh V which appears in my 10th, 12th, degree certificates, PAN & AADHAR too, as well as per EPFO database also my name appears to be the same as rest of the certificate PAN & AADHAR, during the EPF claim i have problem with my name which happens to appear to be in PAN database my name is Vikram Singh Rohit Singh & the PAN vendor suggested me to change the name to ROHIT V SINGH will this effect to change my name in rest of my documents may i know how this can be rectified without making any changes to rest of my documents or should i proceed with the suggestion, Thank you in advance.

  51. If you have only birth/given name and sur name. Then you will never face any problems. All of your ids contains only these two names. So no problem for you.

People those who have initials are facing problems. When it comes to pan and passport. Your name totally changes while expanding the initials from old name.

So better go for name change process and make a new name avoid using initials. instead off you can add as sur/last name. Then your new name can be used in all ids without any single mistakes.

Good choice is two names (i.e. first name and last name).

  52. How can write my name in voter application ?
My name is Mahdharsan.R . I am from Tamilnadu.
Name in my passport is Mahadharsan Ravichandran
Name in my aadhar,12th marksheet – Mahadharsan R

    • You have to select one name that is “Mahadharsan Ravichandran” or just only “Mahadharsan”

and make it in all officials documents. It will be good and simple to you.

Avoid using initials. Only south inidians (but not all) are doing like this. Don’t use in this format “Mahadharsan R” in documents. But if you use. Definitely you will get problem and confusion in future. Confusion of name in all ids may occur.

  61. My name has been mentioned as ” S G Paulin Christina Grace in my bank accounts, educational certificates and in aadhar card.

However, the initials have been extended in my Pan and passport as ” Paulin Christina Grace Sam Ganesh”

Is this called as name mismatch? Do I need to change my name in Pan card as in aadhar? Please reply. Thank you.

    • It is better to have the same name in all the official documents.
Now with Aadhaar card becoming the main identity document, it’s better you stick to name mentioned in it.
Especially as your bank accounts, educational certificates have the same name.
Mismatch of PAN might create a problem when one links it to Aadhaar as while filing Income Tax return,Or getting it verified at UAN website, but there are work arounds.
Passport is needed for international travel so Aadhaar will not be that problem.
Stick to S G Paulin Christina Grace

NOW I WANT TO APPLY PAN CARD BUT INITIALS ARE NOT ALLOWED. BUT ON MY AADHAR CARD THE NAME IS R K HARSHVIR SINGH. PLEASE HELP ME WHAT I DO NOW.

  66. I would like to say something important as I am Suffering Immensely because of the Initials & South India Naming Systems. Also I would like to add that Income Tax Department has given wrong naming formats as above in the Case of SURESH SARDA. Here if SARDA is a women then her actual first name is SARDA not Suresh. Suresh Could be her Husband or Father so SURESH becomes SURNAME.

Same Example in PAN Form is M S KANDASWAMY where KANDASWAMY Is the actual name of the Person/Body M=Madurai=His Village S=Somasundaram=Father’s Name so it should be KANDASWAMY M S where KANDASWAMY is First Name, Madurai=Middle Name & Somasundaram=SURNAME.

In My Case C R ALPHA, where ALPHA is my actual First name Or Body Name
C=Some Family Title Awarded Expanded to CHARLIE & R=Father’s Name=ROMEO

So In actual it should be ALPHA C R not C R ALPHA. But unfortunately since childhood from birth certificate 40 years old everywhere it is written C R ALPHA, I have expanded C=First Name R=Father Name A=My Own Name as Surname in all my ID’s like PAN AADHAAR Passport & it reads CHARLIE ROMEO ALPHA. Wherever Expansion is not needed I write as C R ALPHA. But this is not correct.

Being in North India In 10th Class itself I should have got rid of Initials and had only ALPHA my name & ROMEO as SURNAME & life would have been much easier. The North Indian Naming System is perfect FIRST NAME OF THE PERSON Then Surname or Caste as It is. Like Deepak Chopra !

      • y u all are blaming about naming system of south, we are trying to cum out of caste and surname which is making inequallity among the plp.thats not r8 at all

        • Yes Arun! We should be happy with Caste Opting out naming system and So we are unique.
I hope Many are facing the issue with UAN and PAN Linking with a common error “Name against the UAN doesn’t match with the name in IT dept”.Does someone have solution to overcome this?

      • My son is only 1 yr old. I am from Tamil Nadu. In his birth certificate and aadhar his name is O. Obuli Dhruvan. Where initial O stands for my name. Do I need to change his name in birth certificate and aadhar for Getting my name as his surname like Obuli Dhruvan.O .?
