What are the mandatory documents required for the child? Usually, these documents are required at the time of school admission, the opening of a bank account, taking the child overseas on a holiday, investments in the name of the child. These documents are: birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and passport.

Birth certificate
A birth certificate is an important document which establishes the date of birth of a person. It records the name, gender, parents’ name, address, date of birth and place of birth of the child. It is required for admission of the child in a school, applying for a passport, getting Aadhaar, opening a minor bank account etc. It is a mandatory document that must be obtained within 21 days of the child’s birth. Certificates can also be issued under special provisions to adopted children, and undocumented orphans. Overseas births can also be registered.
There are 2 step in getting a birth certificate
- Registering the birth;
- one is required to register the birth within the period of 21 (twenty-one ) days from the date of birth by the hospital or institution, or by a family member if the birth has taken place at home.
- Birth can be registered at the place of occurrence only. for example, a birth which has taken place in Bombay shall be registered with the concerned local Registrar in Bombay within whose jurisdiction the event has occurred and not say in Delhi where you live.

- After registration, a birth certificate can be obtained by applying to the Registrars of Births and Deaths.
- Registrars of Births and Deaths are appointed for each local area comprising the area within the jurisdiction of the Municipality, Panchayat or other local authority. in the Urban Areas, The Municipal Health Officer, Health officer or Equivalent Officers are appointed as Registrar of births and deaths.
- The application must be made in the prescribed format.
- The first copy of the birth certificate is issued free of charge under section12 of the RBD Act.
- Any number of copies can be obtained under the provision of Section 17 of the Act by paying the prescribed fee. It is advisable to apply for more than one original birth certificate by paying additional charges.
- Certified copy of English translation of Birth or Death Certificates obtained from the office of Chief Registrar (Births & Deaths) on submission of original certificate issued in other languages.
Name of the child on the birth certificate
A birth certificate can be obtained without the name of the child under the provision of Section 14 of the Act. In such cases, the name can be entered by the concerned registration authority without any charge within 12 months and by charging the prescribed fee up to 15 years (from the date of registration).

Aadhaar card for kids
Children can apply for AADHAAR card. for children below 5 years, the child’s Aadhaar card is linked to the parent’s Aadhaar card. Aadhaar is an essential document for school admission.
- No biometric data such as IRIS, thumbprints etc. will be taken for children below 5 years of age.
- Photograph of the child is taken along with biometric verification of the parents.
- Once the child becomes 5 years old, all the biometric information such as IRIS scan and fingerprint needs to be collected. But the Aadhaar card number won’t change.
- After 15 years of age, the biometric information needs to be collected again
Process of getting Aadhaar card for kids
- you need to visit the enrolment center, fill out the enrolment form.
- enclose the copies of child’s birth certificate with your own Aadhaar card.
- Make sure you carry the originals too to the enrolment centre.
- as the age of the applicant is less than 5 years, no biometrics will be recorded, only photograph will serve the purpose.

- These children will need to update their biometrics of ten fingers, iris and facial photograph, when they turn 5 and 15.
Aadhar card for child with age over 5 years
For children above 5 years of age,

- school’s identity card or a declaration on the letterhead of the institution. However, if a child is not enrolled in an educational institution, a parent’s Aadhaar or a Certificate of Identity with photo issued by Gazetted Officer/Tehsildar on letterhead can be accepted as identity proof. - The procedure will be repeated again when they turn 15. After that, you normally do not need to repeat the process. If at a later stage of your life you face a problem (such as fingerprints not matching due to old age or other reason), then you can get it updated.

Passport for kids
- A minor must have a separate passport.
- Minors are issued a 36-page passport booklet.
- A minor’s passport is valid for five years or till he attains 18 years, whichever is earlier.
- However, minors aged between 15 and 18 years may apply for a 10-year passport instead of a passport which is valid till they turn 18.

PAN card for children
A PAN or Permanent Account Number Card is a unique identification that is assigned to every tax paying citizen of India. a PAN card is a permanent number that will not change throughout the lifetime of the holder, the child’s PAN card number will remain the same irrespective of name/address change. PAN Card issued to Minor does not have the Minor’s photo or signature. Hence when minor becomes adult PAN Card needs to be updated.

- If minor is earning income applying his skill then his income will not be clubbed with that of parent and he would have to file income tax return and thus have a PAN card.

Minor’s PAN is similar to that of adult with slight variations given below
- The process of applying for PAN of Minor is same as that of the adult.
- PAN Card issued to Minor does not have the Minor’s photo or signature. Hence when minor becomes adult PAN Card needs to be updated.
- To update PAN for minor one has to apply for correction in data of PAN Card and furnish photo and update his signature with the income tax authorities. The procedure for the same is to apply for it on a PAN request form.
