“Why would my ledger balance show the amount: Rs 14,495.While the available balance of 13,195“, asked Shantanu as he forwarded me the ATM receipt shown in the image below (marked by red). When you check your bank balance, especially after ATM, you may see two different balances, the ledger balance and the available balance. This is because you have a pending transaction. Let’s look at the difference between the ledger balance and available balance.
- The ledger balance is the balance available as of the beginning of the day or balance of your account after posting the previous night’s work.
- The available balance is the ledger balance, plus or minus any subsequent activity during the day, such as debit card purchases, ATM transactions or withdrawals or direct deposits. So it is the balance at any point in time during the day.
So in the case of Shantanu,
- His balance at the beginning of the day was Rs 14,495. So his ledger balance was Rs 14,495.
- He withdrew Rs 1300.
- So now the balance available for him is Rs 14495 – 1300 = 13,195. This is the available balance.
- If there is no other activity during the day like ATM withdrawal or debit car purchase his balance at the end of the day i.e ledger balance would be Rs 13,195.
- If say he again does ATM withdrawal of Rs 1000 during the day then his ledger balance for that day would still be Rs 14,495 but available balance after second withdrawal would become Rs 12,195.
Net balance at end of day taking account of all transactions would be ledger balance.
To understand how ledger and available balances work, let us consider another example of Aryan who has bank account with a ledger balance of Rs 20,000 .
- Of this amount, he has written a cheque for Rs 5,000 that is pending payment from his account as well as a debit card transaction of Rs 4,000.
- In such a case, he has an available balance of Rs 11,000 that he can withdraw, according to the terms of his account.
- Though his ledger balance reads Rs 20,000, he cannot withdraw the entire amount because 9000 of it is pending payment.
- Once the cheque and debit card payments are completely processed, his ledger balance, in such a case, will drop to Rs 11,000
So Available Balance is always less than Ledger Balance
No if money is deposited then your Available balance would be more than Ledger Balance. For example, cheques that you deposited yesterday and money was transferred during the day then Available balance will be more than the Ledger balance as shown in the image below where Shantanu had deposited a cheque of Rs 10,000 but did an ATM withdrawal of Rs 1,000.
- So Ledger balance was 27,312.
- His cheque got credited so available balance became Rs 37,312.
- Then he withdrew Rs 1000 so balance became Rs 36,312.
Your available balance includes credits or debits from transactions that have not yet posted to your account, such as deposits or withdrawals you made in the last 24 hours. i.e Available Balance includes your Ledger Balance and all items presented to bank as pending electronic transactions or holds placed on your account during the course of the current business day. Essentially Available Balance is giving you a snapshot at a point in time during the day. During the day Available balance will change depending on whether money is deposited or withdrawal but ledger balance which only gets updated at end of working day.
During the day you should look at available balance as it is more recent or updated that ledger balance. Thus, it is safer to use your ledger balance than your available balance because if a transaction doesn’t clear, your available balance may not be correct. When your ledger balance and Available balance do not match wait for a day, the next day all bank records will be updated with withdrawals and deposits in the last 24 hrs.

I have mismatch my signature uco current account and did cheque clearing to other icici bank outstation cheque transfer what would i do ?
Mostly your cheque would not be cleared. The cheque deposited by you would be returned unpaid by the bank on the ground that the signature of the drawer of the cheque differs. it also amount to an offense under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
You can stop payment of cheque.
You can then proceed to make alternative arrangements to pay.

The available balance is the ledger balance, plus or minus any subsequent activity during the day, such as debit card purchases, ATM transactions or withdrawals or direct deposits. So it is the balance at any point in time during the day.

You cannot withdraw the money today.
The cheque has to be verified and amount has to be credited into your account. if its local cheque it should be done today or tomorrow.

my ledger balance is #10000 an available is #80000 how can i withdraw the ledger acc
The ledger balance is the balance available as of the beginning of the day or balance of your account after posting the previous night’s work.
The available balance is the ledger balance, plus or minus any subsequent activity during the day, such as debit card purchases, ATM transactions or withdrawals or direct deposits. So it is the balance at any point in time during the day.
Since available balance is more than ledger balance you can withdraw the amount in ledger balance.
Wait for a day then ledger balance would be updated

Stories of people getting shortchanged by the machines are a dime a dozen. In one such instance, someone had tried withdrawing as little as Rs 500 from an ATM, much to the same result. In another, as much as Rs 28,000 meant to be deposited as school fees wasn’t delivered and the bank has not reimbursed the withdrawer even months after the customer put in a complaint.
Your first step would be to complain to the manager of the bank branch where you have the account linked to the card, or the one closest to the ATM where you tried to withdrawing money and failed to get any.
Each bank also lists on its website an address or the name of the official who can receive customer complaints. Sometimes, online links are provided. You can use any of the means —- handwritten or online complaint —- but make sure you keep a copy of the same, which can be provided as a proof of when you sent the complaint to the bank.
This is essential as banks are supposed to resolve the issue within 12 days of receiving the complaint, according to circulars the RBI has sent to banks twice in the last seven months.
Banks shall reimburse to the customers the amount wrongfully debited within a maximum period of 12 days from the date of receipt of customer complaints,
If the amount is not reimbursed in spite of having followed it up with the bank, you can either complain to the RBI or to the Banking Ombudsman. Complaints to both the authorities can be sent either in writing or online via the RBI website. The forms for complaining are available easily on the website.
But note that the Banking Ombudsman can be approached only after the completion of 30 days after complaining (in writing) to the bank. There exists a specific format for complaining to the ombudsman of your respective territory. The same can be obtained at https://secweb.rbi.org.in/BO/compltindex.htm.
How do you prove that notes were not dispensed by the ATM?
Banks are bound to know if the notes have not been dispensed by the ATM. The number of notes put in the ATM and the amount dispensed is tallied at the end of the day with each ATM. Normally, it’s one odd case (of people not getting money out of ATM) and if a claim comes and the amount is the same as the difference noticed in the tally report, then it is given to the customer.
Also, there are cameras in many ATMs and it can be easily established whether the cash is dispensed or not. Customers panic when they see that no notes are dispensed and approach the security guard. But even if the security guard doesn’t stand as eye witness, it can be established that the notes did not come out. MostlyATMs have a telephone which you can just pick up and you are connected to the call centre. You can inform the call centre or the branch, whichever is convenient.
If the bank doesn’t respond after 12 days? RBI has said that it would penalise banks that do not comply with the 12-day norm.
My ledger balance shows 20000INR and available balance 4000 INR ..so after midnight my ledger balance would be 4000INR (for the next day ) and I haven’t spent penny out of 20000 deposited ..what would happen ..please explain !
Why is the available balance less? Did you do some transaction like withdrawal or cheque was issued.
I deposited 6000 in my SBI saving account. but its not available yet
When did you deposit? How did you deposit? Did you check up with the bank!
